Cord eased his weight from one step to another, silent on moccasined feet. He felt more than heard his half-brother, Frank, and Frank’s son, Luke, moving behind him, two more shadows in a still, frosty night.

He slid the key Rachel Ross had provided into the lock on the back door of her house and turned it slowly, opened the door with just as much care. Rachel swore at the first sign of messy illness her husband would be happy to let her spend the night at her father’s with the children. If anything had gone wrong and she had not feigned that illness successfully, Cord planned to leave as quietly as he’d come, postpone this business for another time.

Once all three of them were inside, Cord struck a match, holding it high long enough for a quick look at the room they had entered. Rachel had drawn a plan showing the rooms of the house and the location of every piece of furniture a nighttime intruder could bump into or trip over, but seeing it, even for a few seconds, was better.

Across the room, down the hall—no need for a map when the sound of male snores gave away Randal Ross’s location. In the bedroom, Cord moved to the right side of the bed, waited long enough to be sure Frank and Luke had also reached their agreed upon positions, and struck another match. He lit the lamp sitting on the bedside table located exactly where Rachel had said it would be and nodded at Frank, waiting on the other side of the bed.

The light had Ross starting to wake on his own. The barrel of Frank’s gun, shoved hard under his nose, brought him the rest of the way awake with a strangled sound. “Wha... what the hell.” The pressure of the gun barrel distorted the words, and the look on Frank’s face as he used the gun to press the man back into the pillows shut him right up.

Cord watched Frank’s performance with amusement. Blond-haired, blue-eyed, Frank was not only one of the respected and respectable Bennetts, until Luke had come of age, Frank had been the one men and women in town would have voted the most charming. At least the ones who had never seen him like this would have voted for him. Throwing off the civilized veneer and letting loose the quick-tempered, hard man who lived underneath now and then had to be good for Frank. Cord enjoyed the sight.

A younger version of his father, Luke stood at the foot of the bed. Luke had a wild streak, but he’d never match his father for intensity. His charm came from a genuinely fun-loving personality. From the beginning, he had looked on this outing as entertainment, but Luke knew his part and held his position with a grim expression, staring at Ross with unblinking eyes.

Fortunately, no one except Anne and her mother had ever found Cord charming, so he wasn’t going to have to work at his part in this performance.
